- Diagnosing Connect Problems
-
- Whether you're trying to connect as a demo user or as a regular
- subscriber, you may sometimes encounter initial difficulties
- connecting. Modems aren't always reliable, so here's a guide to
- help you.
-
- You clicked on Connect, but the modem didn't respond at all.
- (Or, you clicked on Dial, the modem did nothing, and then
- Pipeline bounced back to "normal offline operation.)
- 1. Click on the Settings button and double-check to make sure
- your modem settings are correct-- the speed and the type of modem.
- If your particular brand of modem isn't listed, choose "Hayes
- compatible modem." If that doesn't work...
- 2. Go to the Edit menu, choose "Other," and then "Reset Modem."
- If that doesn't work...
- 3. Turn off your modem for five seconds. Then turn it back on.
- If that doesn't work...
- 4. Turn off your modem, quit the program, and then re-open it.
- But if that still doesn't work...
- 4. Restart your Macintosh.
- What's going on here, anyway? The majority of modem
- problems like this result from failed initializations-- or,
- modem resets. Sometimes the only way to reset the modem is
- to turn it off. Your modem may need turning off if you've been
- using it to connect to several online services before dialing
- the Pipeline-- then it becomes "flaky" and needs to be reset.
- If none of the above works, your initialization string
- may be inadequate. Please see the list of recommended
- initialization strings below.
-
- The modem dialed properly, but you can't connect because
- it stalls at "Connected, waiting for host..."
- Check to see if your modem speed is set at 38400 or above. If so,
- lower it to 19200. If that doesn't work...
- This happens occasionally for various reasons. The main thing to
- remember is that it's only temporary. Click on Stop to terminate
- the connection attempt, and close the Dial window. Then come back
- to the Internet menu, choose Connect and dial again. If it still
- stalls, quit the software, turn off your modem, and try again.
- If it happens over and over again, call us for assistance at
- 212-267-3636.
-
- You're dialing through SprintNet, but you can't connect.
- 1. Go to the Access settings and make sure "SprintNet" is selected,
- not "normal dialup."
- 2. Go to the Connection settings and make sure the baud rate is
- on 19200 if the SprintNet site is 14400, or on 9600 if it's that
- speed. (You can find out if your local site is 14400 by calling
- Sprint Customer Service at 1-800-877-5045.)
- 3. Try another SprintNet number to see if the problem is with
- your software settings or with Sprint. If the second number works
- and the first one doesn't, the first one could be broken. Call
- Sprint for further assistance.
-
- You're dialing directly to New York, but you can't connect.
- 1. Go to the Access settings and make sure "normal dialup" is selected,
- not "SprintNet."
- 2. Go to the Connection settings and change the baud rate setting.
- If you have a 14400 modem, try setting it to 19200. With some
- modems you may need to set it to 38400 to get a 14400 connection.
-
- You connect, but all of a sudden the connection drops after
- 30 or 40 seconds.
- Try lowering the baud rate and see what happens. However, this
- may result from the quality of the phone connection being
- insufficient for high speed data transmission. Also, try turning
- off the modem and trying to connect again.
-
- Initialization strings that may come in handy:
- In some situations, people have needed to change their modem initialization
- strings to obtain optimal connection performance.
- To change your modem string, choose Custom on the modem list. You will
- see a box where you can enter an initialization string.
-
- Global Village Teleport Gold II: although Hayes Compatible modem works
- most of the time, you may also want to try AT&F1.
- Global Village Teleport Gold or Mercury: AT&F1W1
- Global Village Powerport Gold or Mercury: AT&F1\Q3W1
